Basic Free Motion Quilting and Design Workshop

Students will learn about the proper tools and techniques to use in order to be successful in Free-motion Machine Quilting.  Many beginner quilt designs for all-over, background, blocks, and borders will be taught.

Class Project:

Students will be working on fabric squares that are layered with batting and backing. Once the squares are completed they can be sewn together as a quilt or wall hanging. These blocks will be a library of quilting designs and great to look back at to see how your machine quilting progresses.

What will be taught in the class:

  • Proper tools and supplies
  • Threads which ones to use and when to use them
  • Differences in batting
  • Understanding thread tension
  • Basting to prevent problem's
  • Control of machine and hand speed
  • Starting and stopping correctly
  • Marking designs on a quilt
  • Understanding continuous line design
  • Variety of all over quilting designs
  • Variety of border quilting designs
  • Variety of designs used for blocks
